One year celebration limps out the door
Well, a year has hopped by since Maizys amputation. I was going to post a happy post about how amazing she was doing. But that is not going to happen. Up until a month ago she was happily hopping along. She was standing on a frozen bank and it gave away and she fell and injured her right front shoulder. She was healing up ok for the first 2 weeks and now she is limping worse than when she injured it. She is getting massage, laser treatments, she is on anti-inflammatory and pain meds. The trouble is she keeps injuring it getting up and down. Its hard to keep her from using and reinjuring it when there are only 3 legs. I bought a front harness for her to help her but it is seeming to not make a difference. Our vet is coming back to see her at home since Maizy loses her poop when she goes to the clinic and will only hurt herself more.
So our story goes on but for how long is debateable. To those reading, please take care of your pups remaining legs.

That’s always our biggest fear as the parents of tripawds. When Pele started having joint problems and being unable to get up and down I took the legs off my sofa and put all the bed mattress on the floor and put a large step (made by stacking those tough plastic storage shelves they sell at Costco or Walmart) in front of it for her. Along with the slew of meds, this has really helped her. I hope you are able to find some solutions that will work in your home.

So very sorry to hear that! We had a similar scare just recently but the results weren’t quite as bad. It is just so unfair to be able to go without mets for so long only to possibly lose our dogs to orthopedic issues. It scared (and still scares) the heck out of me. I hope your vet comes up with something good. My rehab vet just told me:’you know, if all else fails there’s always ortheses’. Would that be an option for you?
all the best,

Wait! We still are celebrating Maizy’s ONE YEAR AMPUVERSARY with lots of applause and cake and ice cream!! Yes indeedy Miss Maizy, this calls for cake and ice cream!! ‘And steak too!!
Bummer about the leg. Yes, regrettably we do see this happen. HOWEVER, with a whole lot of confinement (ugh), it generally gets better. Some have found the dogleggs or doggy brace to be very helpful. Can’t remember the exact name of the product.
Gonna suggest you start a thread for Maizy about this issue over in the forums. These blogs go up and down quickly sometimes and more might see it who have dealt with this issue. Outline everything you’ve been doing so far. I really think, and hope, you can get some additional insight from those who’ve been down that path.
I know MEG had a bad shoulder issue (front legger too) and eventually got it cleared up. Just don’t remember all her solutions. Guess Maizy is on a pain med temporarily to help her feel better while we’re getting this shoulder healed.
In the meantime, we need pictures kf your .MAGNIFICENT Maizy….especially eating some ice cream!!
Hugs and love
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
